HEAD COACH- Tod Thone
Tod Thone enters his fifth year as Head Coach of the UNH Wildcats Wrestling Team, already seeing success with a young program. Thone represents as the 6th Head Coach in the University of New Hampshire's Wrestling history. Thone also serves as the Founder/ President for the UNH Wrestling Alumni Association (UNHWAA), preserving the strong heritage and history of UNH Wrestling Team.
In his fourth year of 2021-2022, Thone led the wildcats to a 5-5 Dual meet record in 2021-2022 (Overall Career 10-8). The Wildcats placed 1st at the Jim Urquhart New England Championships (4 x Individual Champions), and had 8th place finish at the Henry Marsh Invitational. The season finished out with nine NCWA qualifiers in the Northeast Conference Championships. UNH had 2x Northeast Conference Champions (1 named Outstanding Wrestler) and 2x runner up place winners. Thone drives the emphasis of student leadership and development. Student Leaders are responsible for the overall administration of the club. This philosophy provides a unique opportunity for students to develop on and off the mat with leadership abilities. This will assist members well beyond their years at the University of New Hampshire.
Thone came to UNH after filling the following Head Coaching positions at Spaulding High School, NH (3 years) / Kingswood High School, NH (2 years)/ Rochester Middle School (5 years) and forming a pee wee wrestling program called ‘’The New Hampshire Thundercats’’.
During his tenture he was able to produce a New England Place winner/ many NE qualifiers. A NH State Champion and multiple NH Place winners. Thone also coached as an assistant coach at UNH back in 2011-2012 helping send nine wrestlers to the NCWA National Championships leaving with one All-American.
Thone as a competitor wrestled for the UNH Wildcats from 2003-2006 compiling a 100+ wins career. He was a NCWA All- American placing 5th in the country in 2004. Thone was also a 4x NCWA Northeast Conference Place winner, and part of the 3x NCWA Northeast Conference Team Championships in UNH history. Thone was also a 2x NCWA Academic All- American and named team captain in his four year duration on the team. Thone came from Spaulding High School, NH where he Wrestled under coach/father Joel Thone. Thone was a New England Championship Qualifier , 4x NH State Place winner, 100+ career winner, 2002 NH State Wrestling Sportsmanship Award Winner and 4x Team Captain for the Red Raiders.
Tod Thone holds two degree’s from the University of New Hampshire with a Sport Studies Degree in Recreation Management (2006) and Policy and a Restaurant Management Degree in Food Service Education(2004).
Outside the sport of wrestling Thone currently works as a Manufacturing Associate Level 3 for Lonza Biologics Pharmaceuticals. Producing pharmaceutical drugs from Advil to cures to cancers Thone takes great pride in his work being able to save lives and make a difference. Tod & Meghan Thone are the proud parents of three boys, Gabriel (8y), Noah (5y), Caleb (3y) and Aidan (2y).

ASSISTANT COACH- Daric Buttrick
Daric Buttrick is the Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of New Hampshire where he has mentored with Coach Henry Marsh, a member of multiple wrestling halls of fame for seven seasons. As a coach for the Wildcats, Coach Buttrick develops student athletes to reach their personal goals and potentials both on the mat and in the classroom; during his tenure, UNH has boasted multiple Academic All-Americans in every season.
As a competitor, Coach Buttrick had a successful high school and college career that was curtailed by military service. Through High School, he was twice a Maine State Champion, a USA Wrestling Northeast Regional Greco-Roman Champion, and the 1997 Dave Shultz Hall of Fame Award winner for the State of Maine. In college, he wrestled for the NCAA D3 University of Southern Maine in its inaugural season, recording a “most pins as a freshman” record that stood for 12 years into that program’s tenure. After several years with the US Army, he competed at the University of New Hampshire in 2005, winning the Northeast Conference Championship that year.
To his coaching credit, Coach Buttrick has held positions as an Assistant Coach at Marshwood High School (Maine), the Head Coach at Kennebunk High School (Maine), Maine Cadet & Junior “Fargo” Team Head Coach for men and women, Freestyle Director and coach for the Southern Maine Trappers Wrestling Club, and currently works with all ages of athletes at the Hammer Head Wrestling Club (Maine) as a Freestyle and Greco-Roman coach for the club. He is certified as a Bronze Coach by USA Wrestling and holds an M2 rating as a Freestyle and Greco-Roman official.
Outside of the sport, Coach Buttrick serves as a Senior Master Sergeant for the New Hampshire Air National Guard’s full-time force as the Antiterrorism Program Manager. He is married to his wife Abigail, who served as a manager for the NCAA D3 Messiah College Wrestling Team for all four years of College. He has two daughters, Is’Bella (10y) and Victoria (18m); Bella has been wrestling for 6 years and was awarded the Outstanding Female Wrestler Award at the Montreal (Can) Open in 2018.
